Backpacks for Hunger

Psalm 72:4; Please stand up for the poor, Help the children of the needy

In August of 2012 the Lord placed a burden on our hearts to start an outreach to help meet some of the needs of children in our community. The vision for “Backpacks 4 Hunger, No child goes hungry over the weekend was born. We met with Dr. Teigland then superintendent and Ron Lorenz Director of Student and Staff Services of Indianola Schools to get their approval and help in spreading the word to families with elementary age children in our community that would benefit from this program. The premise is very simple; every Friday a child will receive a cinch sack with six entrees and two snacks that are child friendly to supplement their meals over the weekend. On Monday they return the cinch sacks to the schools where we pick them up, clean them, fill them again and return them to the schools so that children can pick them up on Friday and repeat the process. There are no requirements to receive this help other than a phone call to us so that we can get some simple information that is needed. All information is keep strictly confidential. This program doesn’t affect any other programs that families may be involved in. Our desire is that God receive all the glory as He works through other churches and civic groups to meet a basic need of children in our community.
This is truly “Community serving Community.”

On November 30th, 2012 we delivered our first 30 backpacks to the elementary schools. Since that time the need has grown tremendously and we now deliver 110 plus backpacks to the elementary and middle schools weekly.
